Music to help sleep

Music in the background is a good way to relax if you suffer from a sleep disorder such as insomnia.

Insomnia is a sleep disorder and is recognized by chronic problems  falling asleep, staying asleep or only sleeping for several hours and waking up and being unable to go back to sleep. It is usually followed by impairment of some functions while awake. Both organic and non-organic insomnia constitute a sleep disorder

It can be caused by another disorder, by changes in the sleep environment, by the timing of sleep, or by stress. Researchers do not know exactly why people need sleep, but we do know that lack of sleep can kill. Humans deprived of sleep for long periods begin hallucinating and develop other mental problems.

If sleep time isn’t a good time for you, talk to your doctor or healthcare professional about your options. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) was organized to make sure that the increase in people with sleeping problems get the very best in medical care.  Sleep medicine is now a recognized medical subspecialty. Doctors  specialize in sleep medicine to help people who are unable to sleep well. Sleep doctors are able to find and treat both common and rare sleep disorders. Some common sleep disorders are insomnia, sleepwalking,  jet lag, snoring and obstructive sleep apnea.

Your doctor will recommend trying to get to sleep by changing your sleep habits from bad to good.  These include reducing stress using visualization or relaxation techniques, making lifestyle changes such as no-smoking, no caffeine, no daytime naps, or getting more light during the day.  Other natural or best sleep aids are changing to a healthier diet and starting an exercise program.   A healthy body is better able to have no sleep problems.

Soft music playing in the background is also a way to help you relax and fall sleep.  Or you may find that using one of those machine that makes the sound of rain falling, or waterfalls, can also help.

But if these natural ways to help you sleep do not help, and your sleep problem continues nightly for at least 2 weeks, you should visit with a sleep specialist or your family doctor as sleep disorders can be symptoms of other and more serious medical conditions.

But try the soft music after soaking in a warm bath first.  You might be surprised how much that will help fall asleep especially if you add a warm glass of milk.
